Physiotherapy helps to restore movement and function resulting from injury, disability or illness.
A physiotherapist can assess your movement and function, and develop a treatment plan together with you, your whānau/family and caregivers to restore or develop your potential including:
We provide physiotherapy services to inpatients, outpatients and the community across the West Coast.
Inpatient physiotherapy services are available at Te Nīkau Grey Hospital and Buller Health.
Referrals are generated from medical, nursing and allied health colleagues who identify a need for support during your admission.
Some patients may also require ongoing physiotherapy after leaving hospital and will be referred onto our Outpatient or Community team.
Outpatient physiotherapy services are provided at Te Nikau Greymouth Hospital, Hokitika Health Centre, Buller Health (Westport), Reefton Integrated Family Health Centre (IFHC) and Karamea Health Centre. Our team can also use videoconference facilities for people unable to travel to these main centres e.g. South Westland.
Referrals can be sent to physiotherapy from a health professional such as your medical team or GP.
Our team of Kaiāwhina/Allied Health Assistants also support our Physiotherapy staff and help run classes in Greymouth, Hokitika and Westport, for people following knee joint replacement, for falls prevention and for those with breathing or heart problems.
The classes offer support with management, education and appropriate exercise programmes.
If you can’t attend an outpatient clinic we can visit you at home. Community physiotherapists work out of Greymouth, Hokitika and Westport. They work closely with other clinicians within the community health teams, including District Nurses and Occupational Therapists.
Te Nīkau Health Centre’s Primary Care Physiotherapy role is a pilot position. Initially, clinics will be held from mid–January 2023 until mid–July 2023. If the pilot is successful, the role may become permanent and be expanded to other sites.
The Primary Care Physiotherapist is not available for ongoing or long-term treatment and rehabilitation.
